Overcoming Writers Block

Creative slows are inevitable.

Often we hit ‘the wall’ immediately following a creative streak, leaving our minds breathless. Sometimes it feels like ‘the wall’ has multiplied and boxed us in and no matter what we do, we just can’t find the inspiration.

Regardless of when or how the writer’s block comes about, all we know is that it is a visitor with a passport specifically for our minds and can, and will, vacation in our heads whether we like it or not. So, here are our tips on overcoming it.

  1. 1. Don’t fight it
Writer’s block can often be hard to accept, especially if we did not meet our goals and have an upcoming deadline. Most of us likely push through our lack of ingenuity and creative flair, determined to see our goals through, only to find that what we had written was worse than not writing at all. Our best work is grown from inspiration, not force. And the more we push our mind, the longer the recovery.
So, listen to what your body is telling you. Put down the pen. Step away from the keyboard. Take a break.

  2. 2. Do absolutely nothing
How often do you merely just exist? I don’t mean scrolling on your phone, walking your dog, listening to music, surfing the web, stretching, drinking coffee beneath a shaded tree, or exercising. I mean, existing.
Find a spot to sit, or stand, or wander. Be silent and quiet and observe your surroundings nonchalantly. Allow yourself to be completely present with your surroundings. Don’t allow your mind to wander to the tasks you have yet to tick off, or the fact that you are struggling to write, or what you’re going to cook for dinner. Be present. Exist.
Sometimes it is when we do not seek anything at all that we find exactly what we were looking for.
